ProSoft Organic Cotton Sherpa ECO-PUL: The Complete Guide to Wazoodle's Plush Organic Waterproof Fabric

What ProSoft Organic Cotton Sherpa ECO-PUL Is and Why It Matters

ProSoft Organic Cotton Sherpa ECO-PUL is a dual-function waterproof laminate that bonds 1 mil polyurethane film to organic cotton sherpa pile using ECO-Thermal Bonding Technology (permanent film fusion independently tested 50% stronger than competitor US-made PUL). At 285–350 GSM with a waterproof barrier rated at more than 100× any normal use pressure and breathability matched to resting body moisture output, this fabric provides a plush, absorbent sherpa surface on one side and a complete waterproof barrier on the reverse — the deepest pile texture in the ProSoft Organic Cotton ECO-PUL family.

The organic cotton sherpa base (82–90% organic cotton via US Cotton Trust Protocol) delivers a raised, textured pile that actively captures and holds moisture while providing soft grip on surfaces. ProSoft Organic Cotton Sherpa ECO-PUL features Waterproof 300X Technology (rated waterproof integrity through 300+ wash cycles) and SilentFlex Technology (quiet fabric-like drape). Customer reports consistently describe the fabric as soft, lightweight despite layered construction, and flexible in finished products. CPSIA certified, Forever Chemicals-Free (no PFAS, BPA, phthalates). Made in USA by AKAS Tex.

For detailed technology explanations, see ProSoft ECO-Thermal Bonding Technology Discovery and ProSoft Waterproof 300X Technology Discovery.

The Complete ProSoft Organic Cotton Sherpa ECO-PUL Lineup: Standard, Silver, Stretch-FIT, and FoodSAFE Variants

ProSoft Organic Cotton Sherpa ECO-PUL comes in four variants sharing the same sherpa pile + PUL construction principle, separated by antimicrobial treatment, stretch capability, and food-contact certification.

Standard
  • W-388 — ProSoft Organic Cotton Sherpa Waterproof ECO-PUL Fabric: 285 GSM, 56" width, 0.044" thickness. 90% organic cotton / 10% polyurethane sherpa pile with ECO-Thermal Bonding Technology (permanent film fusion independently tested 50% stronger than competitor US-made PUL) and Waterproof 300X Technology (300+ wash cycle durability). 5% crosswise stretch, 1–2% shrinkage. UPF 50+ UV protection. Available in Natural colorway.
Silver Antimicrobial
  • W-521 — ProSoft Organic Cotton Sherpa Waterproof ECO-PUL Silver Fabric: 285 GSM, 56" width, 0.044" thickness. Identical base construction to W-388 with the addition of Silver Plus antimicrobial treatment (inhibits bacterial, fungal, and algae growth on fabric surfaces, controlling odors between washings). Nanoparticle-free. Available in Natural colorway.
Stretch-FIT
FoodSAFE
  • W-682 — ProSoft FoodSAFE Organic Cotton Sherpa Waterproof PUL Fabric: 300 GSM, 56" width, 0.044" thickness. 85% organic cotton / 15% polyurethane with FDA food-contact certification (21 CFR 175.300 and 177.1680 — certified for direct contact with all food types from freezer storage at -20°C to 250°F). Both fabric and film sides tested safe for food contact. Available in Natural colorway.
Outlier Note — W-532 Stretch-FIT: The Stretch-FIT variant diverges significantly from the other three sherpa variants. It adds Lycra for 4-way stretch (vs one-direction-only stretch in Standard/Silver/FoodSAFE), uses a different fiber blend (82/12/6 vs 85–90% cotton), runs narrower (48–50" vs 56"), heavier (350 vs 285–300 GSM), and thicker (0.065" vs 0.044"). Choose Stretch-FIT specifically when form-fitting applications require stretch and recovery — diaper covers that conform to body shape, fitted mattress protectors, or pet pad covers that wrap around cushions.

All fabric specifications may vary ±10% due to textile industry manufacturing standards.

Choosing Your ProSoft Organic Cotton Sherpa ECO-PUL: Standard vs Silver vs Stretch-FIT vs FoodSAFE

ProSoft Organic Cotton Sherpa ECO-PUL's four variants all provide the same waterproof barrier with plush sherpa texture. Standard, Silver, and FoodSAFE share the same 56" width and 0.044" thickness — your choice among these three depends on antimicrobial or food-contact needs. Stretch-FIT is a distinct construction for form-fitting applications.

When Standard (W-388) Is the Right Choice
  • Pet products: Dog bed covers protecting memory foam from accidents, waterproof dog coats, and pet carriers. Customer reports confirm impressive durability and describe the fabric as a significant upgrade over standard PUL for premium pet products.
  • Castor oil packs: Single-layer construction with absorbent sherpa contact and waterproof backing — customers report this eliminates the need for additional outer protective layers for oil containment.
  • Regular-wash baby products: Cloth diaper covers, changing pad covers, and baby accessories laundered after each use.
When Silver (W-521) Is the Right Choice
  • Period underwear and menstrual products: Waterproof backing with Silver Plus odor control for intimate care applications requiring antimicrobial protection between washes.
  • Extended-wear incontinence products: Silver Plus adds odor management during prolonged use — recommended for mattress protectors and bed pads where laundering may not be immediate.
When Stretch-FIT (W-532) Is the Right Choice
  • Form-fitting diaper covers: 4-way Lycra stretch with shape recovery conforms to body movement — fitted covers that hold their shape through wear and washing.
  • Fitted mattress protectors and pad covers: Stretch wraps around cushions and mattresses without bunching. Sherpa texture provides no-slip grip (coefficient of friction up to 1.9).
  • Therapeutic wraps: Customer reports include micro-current therapy wraps and castor oil pack wraps where stretch conforms to body contours.
When FoodSAFE (W-682) Is the Right Choice
  • Reusable food storage: Food storage bags, bowl covers, and lunch bag linings requiring FDA food-contact certification for all food types from freezer to hot food (250°F maximum).
  • Baby feeding products: Bibs and burp cloths where FDA certification provides documented safety for oral contact, with absorbent sherpa to capture spills.

Bleach restrictions vary by variant: Never use chlorine bleach on any variant — chlorine damages the polyurethane laminate. W-521 Silver additionally cannot tolerate oxygen bleach (degrades Silver Plus treatment). W-388 Standard tolerates non-chlorine oxygen bleach sparingly.

Working With ProSoft Organic Cotton Sherpa ECO-PUL: Sewing and Construction Guide

ProSoft Organic Cotton Sherpa ECO-PUL sews on standard domestic machines with the right setup. Customer reports emphasize easy cutting and sewing characteristics, quick project completion times, and compatibility with standard finishing techniques including bias binding and velcro closures. The fabric arrives cut-and-sew ready with no pre-washing required.

Cutting and Layout
  • Sharp tools essential: Sherpa pile dulls blades faster than smooth fabrics — use a sharp rotary cutter or shears. Cut through the full pile thickness cleanly.
  • Mark on fabric side only: Film side rejects standard marking tools. Pin within seam allowances only — or use clips — to avoid unnecessary holes in waterproof areas.
  • Shrinkage planning: Expect 1–2% shrinkage in both directions on first wash — minimal pattern adjustment needed.
Sewing Recommendations
  • Needles: Use ballpoint/jersey needles (sizes 80/12 or 90/14) — sharp needles slice knit yarns and create enlarged holes that leak.
  • Presser foot: Use a Teflon/glide foot or walking foot — the polyurethane film sticks to standard presser feet. Alternatives: sew through wax paper or dab minimal machine oil on the foot.
  • Thread: Quality polyester thread (Tex-27 or 65/2 grade) exclusively — cotton and rayon wick moisture through needle holes, defeating the barrier.
  • Stitch length: Use 3.0–3.5mm to reduce perforation density while maintaining seam strength.

Critical — Seam Sealing Required: Every needle hole through the polyurethane film permanently compromises waterproofing. Use clips instead of pins, plan stitching lines carefully, and apply heat-activated seam sealing tape over all sewn seams to restore the barrier.

Pairing ProSoft Organic Cotton Sherpa ECO-PUL With Other Wazoodle Fabrics

ProSoft Organic Cotton Sherpa ECO-PUL's plush sherpa face absorbs while the PUL side blocks — and the raised pile creates a natural grip surface that prevents slippage in layered constructions. Pairing decisions focus on additional absorbent capacity or exterior finishing layers.

Absorbent Core Partners
  • Zorb Original (W-202): Thin, high-capacity absorbent interlining with Hydro-Dual Fiber Technology (rapid liquid capture and distribution). The sherpa face of this PUL can serve as one enclosure layer for Zorb Original, which must be enclosed before washing.
  • Zorb 3D Organic Cotton Dimple (W-231): Standalone organic absorbent with Zorb 3D Fiber Technology (dimensional moisture distribution) for added capacity in heavy-use applications like incontinence products.
  • ProECO Organic Cotton Fleece (W-244): Additional organic absorbency for all-organic stacks where maximum moisture capacity matters.
Proven Layer Stack Configurations
  • ProSoft Organic Cotton Sherpa ECO-PUL (W-388) standalone: Single-layer construction for pet bed covers, castor oil packs, and dog coats — sherpa absorbs while PUL contains. Customer-validated for premium pet products with bias binding and velcro closures.
  • Zorb Original (W-202) → ProSoft Organic Cotton Sherpa ECO-PUL (W-388): Zorb absorbent core with sherpa PUL as combined absorbent surface and waterproof backing — for changing pads and incontinence products requiring extra capacity.
  • ProSoft Stretch-FIT Sherpa ECO-PUL (W-532) as fitted cover: 4-way stretch wraps around cushion or mattress while sherpa grip prevents shifting — no-slip waterproof cover for pet beds and changing stations.
  • ProSoft FoodSAFE Sherpa PUL (W-682) + Cotton Exterior: FoodSAFE PUL as interior food-contact lining for reusable storage bags — sherpa provides cushioning while PUL film creates food-safe barrier.

Your results may vary based on product design, construction method, and end-use requirements.

Common Applications for ProSoft Organic Cotton Sherpa ECO-PUL

ProSoft Organic Cotton Sherpa ECO-PUL serves as the combined absorbent-plus-waterproof layer in products where plush texture, surface grip, and leak protection are all needed. The sherpa pile provides the deepest, most textured surface in the ProSoft Organic Cotton ECO-PUL family — choose this when cushioned comfort and grip matter as much as waterproofing.

Pet bed covers and dog coats are the standout application for this family. Customers create removable, washable covers for memory foam dog beds where the waterproof barrier protects cushioning from accidents while sherpa provides comfortable sleeping surface. Makers have also constructed waterproof dog coats for larger breeds, finishing with bias binding and velcro closures — dogs wear the garments comfortably.

Castor oil pack therapy uses multiple variants across Standard (W-388) and Stretch-FIT (W-532). The sherpa-plus-PUL construction eliminates additional outer protective layers — absorbent sherpa contacts skin while PUL prevents oil leakage.

Period underwear and menstrual products use the Silver variant (W-521) and Stretch-FIT (W-532), both validated by customers for period underwear construction. Waterproof backing with absorbent sherpa face provides leak protection with comfort.

Cloth diaper covers provide a waterproof shell with plush sherpa interior against baby's skin. The Stretch-FIT variant (W-532) adds 4-way stretch for form-fitting diaper covers that conform to body movement.

Medical and therapeutic wraps use the Stretch-FIT variant (W-532) for specialized micro-current therapy wraps where waterproof protection with stretch and comfort is required for electrical therapy applications.

Reusable food storage uses the FoodSAFE variant (W-682) for food storage bags, bowl covers, and lunch bag linings with FDA-certified safety for all food types.

Fabric vs. Finished Product: CPSIA certification of the fabric component does not automatically certify your finished product. Depending on how your product is constructed, independent CPSIA testing of the finished item may also be required.

For what these certifications mean, see Understanding Wazoodle Fabric Certifications & Safety Standards. For how FDA food-contact certification works across the full FoodSAFE product line, see ProSoft FoodSAFE PUL: The Complete Guide to FDA Food-Contact Certified Waterproof Fabrics.

ProSoft Organic Cotton Sherpa ECO-PUL Care: Washing, Drying, and What to Avoid

ProSoft Organic Cotton Sherpa ECO-PUL maintains its Waterproof 300X Technology (300+ wash cycle durability) when care protocols protect the polyurethane film from chemical degradation and heat damage. The fabric arrives cut-and-sew ready — do not pre-wash before construction.

Washing

Wash in hot water (rated to 145–165°F) with a zero-residue liquid detergent — warm water extends film lifespan. Add an extra rinse cycle to remove detergent residues that accumulate on the polyurethane film.

Drying

Dry on medium heat only — never exceed 130°F (50°C). High heat causes polyurethane breakdown appearing as stiffening, cracking, or delamination.

What to Avoid

Substances that permanently destroy waterproofing: Fabric softeners coat fibers and eliminate both absorbency and waterproofing — damage is irreversible. Chlorine bleach causes delamination. Vinegar and baking soda break down the laminate bond. Dryer sheets coat the film identically to liquid softeners. Non-chlorine oxygen bleach is acceptable sparingly for W-388 Standard only — avoid on W-521 Silver, W-532 Stretch-FIT, and W-682 FoodSAFE variants.

Manufacturing Odor

New fabric may have a noticeable smell from the thermal bonding process. This dissipates within 1–7 days of airing or after a single wash-dry cycle.
