ProSoft Foam ECO-PUL: The Complete Guide to Wazoodle's Cushioned Waterproof Fabric

What ProSoft® Foam ECO-PUL™ Is

ProSoft® Waterproof Foam ECO-PUL™ Fabric (W-367) is the only waterproof PUL in Wazoodle's ProSoft line with integrated foam cushioning — a polyurethane laminate that bonds 1 mil TPU film to a foam base using ECO-Thermal Bonding Technology (permanent film fusion independently tested 50% stronger than competitor US-made PUL).

The foam substrate provides built-in padding and a high-grip surface (coefficient of friction up to 1.9) that prevents sliding over furniture cushions and foam surfaces.

Where Foam ECO-PUL fits: This is a specialty variant for applications requiring waterproofing with cushioning and non-slip grip in a single layer — changing pads, medical examination table covers, wheelchair seat barriers, and furniture protection. At 36" width (narrowest in the ProSoft line), it's designed for pad and cover applications rather than garment construction. Choose this when your product needs built-in padding with waterproofing. For thin-profile waterproofing without cushioning, standard ECO-PUL options provide wider widths and lighter weights.

The fabric shares the rated ProSoft waterproof barrier — rated at more than 100× any normal use pressure with breathability matched to resting body moisture output — plus Waterproof 300X Technology (rated integrity through 300+ wash cycles) and SilentFlex Technology (quiet operation). Unique in the line for offering both 10% crosswise and 5% lengthwise stretch, allowing the fabric to conform to curved surfaces while maintaining waterproof coverage. Requires seam sealing tape over all sewn seams.

Made in USA by AKAS Tex. CPSIA certified for children's products. Forever Chemicals-Free verified (no PFAS, PFOA, PFOS, BPA, or phthalates). UPF 50+. For how ECO-PUL compares to CORE PUL, MediPUL, and FoodSAFE PUL, see Choosing Between ProSoft PUL Types.

Working With ProSoft® Foam ECO-PUL™

ProSoft® Foam ECO-PUL™ uses the same core PUL sewing techniques as the standard ECO-PUL line. The foam base provides surface grip that actually makes cutting easier than smooth PUL, though the textured surface can stick to sewing machine components.

Machine Setup & Sewing Techniques
  • Presser foot: A Teflon/glide foot or walking foot prevents the foam and film surfaces from sticking. Alternatives: sew through wax paper, or dab sewing machine oil on the foot.
  • Needles: Use ballpoint/jersey needles appropriate for the base construction. Sharp needles create enlarged holes that leak.
  • Thread: Use quality polyester thread (Tex-27 or 65/2 grade). Cotton and rayon threads wick moisture through needle holes.
  • Cutting: Rotary cutter or sharp scissors. The foam texture provides grip that stabilizes fabric during cutting — an advantage over smooth PUL.
  • Width consideration: At 36" width, plan pattern layouts carefully. This is significantly narrower than the standard 54"–60" width range of other ProSoft variants.
Seam Sealing Heat-activated seam sealing tape (light-to-medium weight PUL grade) must be applied over all sewn seams. Apply with warm iron on the fabric side only — never iron the polyurethane film side directly.

Critical: Every needle hole through the polyurethane film permanently compromises waterproofing. Pin only in seam allowances and seal every sewn seam with heat-activated tape. The foam base makes clips and pattern weights particularly effective alternatives to pins.

No pre-washing is required — the fabric ships cut-and-sew ready. Manufacturing odor from thermal bonding is common with this variant and requires 1–7 days of airing or a wash-dry cycle to dissipate.

Pairing ProSoft® Foam ECO-PUL™ With Other Fabrics

ProSoft® Foam ECO-PUL™ provides both waterproofing and cushioning, so it often serves as the primary functional layer with minimal additional fabric partners.

Surface Partners
  • ProCool® Performance Interlock: Moisture-wicking surface layer for the patient-facing or skin-contact side of changing pads and medical underpads. See ProCool® Performance Interlock: The Complete Guide to Wazoodle's Versatile Moisture-Wicking Fabric.
  • ProECO® Organic Cotton Fleece: Natural fiber absorbent surface for organic-certified products. See ProECO® Organic Cotton Fleece: The Complete Guide to Wazoodle's Premium Organic Cotton Fabric.
  • Cotton flannel: Soft, absorbent patient-facing surface for institutional underpads and changing pads.
Proven Layer Stacks
  • Changing pad: Cotton flannel or ProCool® surface → optional absorbent layer → ProSoft Foam ECO-PUL (W-367) as waterproof cushioned backing. The foam side provides non-slip grip on the changing surface.
  • Wheelchair seat protector: ProSoft Foam ECO-PUL (W-367) as single-layer barrier with foam grip preventing pad from sliding on the seat cushion.
  • Medical examination table cover: Absorbent surface layer → ProSoft Foam ECO-PUL (W-367) as waterproof cushioned backing with non-slip foam holding the cover in place.

ProSoft® Foam ECO-PUL™ Applications

ProSoft® Foam ECO-PUL™ is designed for pad, cover, and protector applications requiring waterproofing with integrated cushioning and non-slip grip.

Changing pads are the primary application — CPSIA certification for children's products, breathable waterproof barrier preventing heat buildup, and foam cushioning providing comfort and grip on the changing surface.

Medical underpads and examination table covers benefit from the non-slip foam surface (COF up to 1.9) that holds the pad in position, the 300+ wash cycle durability for institutional laundering, and the breathable barrier preventing moisture accumulation during extended patient contact.

Furniture protection includes wheelchair seat barriers, chair pads, and pet furniture covers. The foam grip prevents sliding over existing cushions without pins or adhesive. Pet crate liners use the waterproof barrier with cushioning comfort.

Not recommended for: Extended outdoor exposure (UV radiation degrades polyurethane in as little as 10 hours under high UV), clothing or wearable garments (foam construction inappropriate for apparel), and applications requiring widths greater than 36".

Caring for ProSoft® Foam ECO-PUL™

Washing

Hot water safe. Use zero-residue liquid detergent with an extra rinse cycle. Non-chlorine oxygen bleach is acceptable sparingly.

Drying

Medium heat only — never exceed 130°F (50°C). High heat damages both the polyurethane film and the foam substrate.

Avoid completely

Fabric softeners (permanently destroy waterproofing), chlorine bleach (causes delamination), vinegar and baking soda (break down the laminate bond), dryer sheets.
