ProSoft 2 mil ECO-PUL: The Complete Guide to Wazoodle's Heavy-Duty Waterproof Barrier Fabric

What ProSoft® Waterproof 2 mil ECO-PUL™

ProSoft® Waterproof 2 mil ECO-PUL™ is a thicker-film waterproof barrier fabric in Wazoodle's ProSoft PUL line — a polyurethane laminate that bonds 2 mil TPU film to a polyester interlock knit base using ECO-Thermal Bonding Technology (permanent film fusion independently tested 50% stronger than competitor US-made PUL).

At 180 GSM and 0.022" thickness, this construction delivers a waterproof barrier rated at more than 100× any normal use pressure while breathing at roughly the rate a resting body produces moisture vapor — providing a more substantial barrier layer than the 1 mil ECO-PUL while maintaining soft, flexible drape.

Where 2 mil ECO-PUL fits: This is the heavier-barrier option within the ECO-PUL thermal-bonded line. The thicker 2 mil film provides higher hydrostatic pressure (240 psi vs. 225 psi for 1 mil), lower stretch (5% vs. 10%), and UPF 50+ sun protection. Choose 2 mil when applications demand a more robust barrier with greater dimensional stability — incontinence products, pet bedding, outdoor furniture protection, and food storage. The lineup includes a FoodSAFE FDA food-contact certified variant for direct food contact applications.

All 2 mil ECO-PUL variants share Waterproof 300X Technology (rated waterproof integrity through 300+ wash cycles) and SilentFlex Technology (quiet operation without plastic rustling). The lineup includes 4 variants: a solid-color base, a Silver Plus antimicrobial option, a printed pattern version, and a FoodSAFE FDA food-contact certified option. Every variant requires seam sealing tape over all sewn seams to maintain waterproof integrity at stitch points.

Made in USA by AKAS Tex. CPSIA certified for children's products. Forever Chemicals-Free verified (no PFAS, PFOA, PFOS, BPA, or phthalates).

For how 2 mil ECO-PUL compares to CORE PUL, FoodSAFE PUL, and MediPUL, see Choosing Between ProSoft PUL Types (DF-005).

The ProSoft® Waterproof 2 mil ECO-PUL™ Lineup

ProSoft® Waterproof 2 mil ECO-PUL™ is available in 4 variants sharing the same core waterproof barrier construction — waterproof pressure rated at more than 100× any normal use scenario with breathability matched to resting body moisture output. The three standard variants are 180 GSM, 0.022" thick with 5% crosswise stretch. They differ in surface treatment, pattern, and food-contact certification.

Standard 2 mil ECO-PUL Variants
  • ProSoft® Waterproof 2 mil ECO-PUL™ Fabric (W-273): The foundation variant. 180 GSM, 56"–62" width, 0.022" thickness. 64% polyester / 36% polyurethane interlock knit base with ECO-Thermal Bonding Technology (permanent film fusion independently tested 50% stronger than competitor US-made PUL). Available in solid colors with the widest width range in the lineup.
  • ProSoft® Waterproof 2 mil ECO-PUL™ Silver Fabric (W-268): Same base construction as W-273 with Silver Plus antimicrobial treatment (inhibits bacteria, fungi, and algae growth for odor control). Rated 99.9% effective when moisture-activated. 58"–60" width. For extended-wear applications requiring odor management between washes.
  • ProSoft® Waterproof 2 mil ECO-PUL™ Print Fabric (W-511): 180 GSM printed ProCool® Interlock base with 2 mil PUL film on the back. 56"–60" width. Decorative patterns on fabric face for applications where visual appeal matters alongside waterproof performance.
FoodSAFE® Food-Contact Certified
  • ProSoft FoodSAFE® Heavy Duty Waterproof PUL Fabric (W-397): 180 GSM, 58"–60" width, 0.019" thickness. 64% polyester / 36% polyurethane with FDA food-contact certification (21 CFR 177.1680 and 175.300) — both fabric and film sides certified safe for direct contact with all food types from freezer (-20°C) to 250°F. Shares the same waterproof rating and 5% crosswise stretch of the standard 2 mil platform. Customers describe a soft hand feel with no plastic smell, and report the heavier-weight FoodSAFE construction provides a nicer, more substantial feel than standard-weight FoodSAFE PUL for reusable food bag construction. Customer-validated durability includes 6+ year lifespans in high-wear applications and scratch resistance against 90+ lb dogs.
Key Concept — FoodSAFE Heavy Duty (W-397): This variant shares the 2 mil ECO-PUL platform's waterproof rating and 5% crosswise stretch, providing greater dimensional stability and a more robust barrier than the 1 mil FoodSAFE variants (which have 10% stretch and a thinner film). Choose W-397 when food storage applications demand the firmer body of the 2 mil platform — customers specifically note the heavier weight provides a superior feel compared to standard-weight FoodSAFE PUL for snack bags and sandwich wraps.

All measurements are subject to ±10% manufacturing tolerance. Your results may vary between production runs.

Choosing Your ProSoft® Waterproof 2 mil ECO-PUL™

ProSoft® Waterproof 2 mil ECO-PUL™ variant selection comes down to three questions. Since all four variants share the same waterproof barrier and breathability ratings, choosing between them is about matching the right combination of food-contact certification, treatment, and surface to your application.

Variant Decisions

Do you need FDA food-contact certification?
The FoodSAFE Heavy Duty variant (W-397) carries FDA certification per 21 CFR 177.1680 and 175.300 for repeated-use food storage — both fabric and film sides tested safe for direct contact with all food types from freezer to 250°F. Choose W-397 for reusable snack bags, sandwich wraps, bowl covers, and applications where the fabric contacts food directly. Customers who have used both the 1 mil and 2 mil FoodSAFE variants report preferring the heavier construction's more substantial feel for food storage bags. If your product doesn't involve food contact, standard variants perform identically on waterproofing.

Do you need antimicrobial odor control?
The Silver variant (W-268) adds bacterial inhibition rated 99.9% effective when moisture-activated. Choose Silver Plus for products worn extended periods between washes — incontinence products, menstrual pad backing, overnight diaper covers. If your product gets washed after each use, the standard variant (W-273) performs identically on waterproofing.

Do you need printed patterns?
The Print variant (W-511) provides decorative designs on ProCool Interlock base. Choose prints for diaper covers, changing pads, and accessories where visual appeal drives purchasing. Printed patterns are directional — plan for 20–40% additional yardage for pattern matching. If aesthetics are secondary to function, solid-color variants offer wider width ranges.

Users who have worked with both film thicknesses report that 2 mil provides a more substantial hand feel and greater dimensional stability than 1 mil, while some find 1 mil preferable for lightweight applications like sandwich wraps where minimal bulk matters most. Users also consistently note that ProSoft PUL quality exceeds craft store alternatives.

For choosing between ECO-PUL and other ProSoft PUL types, see Choosing Between ProSoft PUL Types (DF-005).

Working With ProSoft® Waterproof 2 mil ECO-PUL™

ProSoft® Waterproof 2 mil ECO-PUL™ requires the same specialized construction techniques as all ProSoft PUL fabrics — the polyurethane film surface sticks to standard presser feet, every needle hole compromises the waterproof barrier, and thread choice affects moisture wicking at stitch points. Users describe this fabric as soft, pliable, and sewing "like a dream" once the right setup is in place.

Machine Setup & Sewing Techniques
  • Presser foot: A Teflon/glide foot or walking foot prevents the PUL surface from sticking. Walking foot works best when PUL faces feed dogs; Teflon foot when PUL faces up. Alternatives: sew through wax paper, or dab machine oil on the foot.
  • Needles: Use ballpoint/jersey needles (sizes 75/11 or 80/12) — the interlock knit base requires ballpoint tips. Sharp needles slice yarns and enlarge holes, creating leak points.
  • Thread: Use quality polyester thread (Tex-27 or 65/2 grade). Cotton and rayon threads wick moisture through needle holes.
  • Orientation: Sew with waterproof film side down against feed dogs for the smoothest feeding. Reduce speed for better control with the waterproof surface.
  • Cutting & marking: Cuts cleanly without fraying — no edge finishing required. Use mini clothespins or clips instead of pins (every pin hole compromises waterproofing). Mark on the textile side only; silver Sharpie markers show well on darker colors.
Seam Sealing Heat-activated seam sealing tape must be applied over all sewn seams. Stitching creates needle holes through the TPU film, and seam sealing tape melts into those holes to restore the waterproof barrier. Apply with a warm iron on the fabric side — tape is a sealant over completed stitched seams, not a structural replacement for stitching.

Critical: Every needle hole through the polyurethane film permanently compromises waterproofing. Use clips instead of pins, plan stitching lines carefully, and seal every sewn seam with heat-activated tape.

No pre-washing is required or recommended — all variants ship cut-and-sew ready. Manufacturing odor from thermal bonding dissipates after a wash-dry cycle or 24–72 hours of airing.

Pairing ProSoft® Waterproof 2 mil ECO-PUL™ With Other Fabrics

ProSoft® Waterproof 2 mil ECO-PUL™ serves as the waterproof barrier layer in multi-layer constructions, positioned between absorbent cores and outer shells or directly as the outermost waterproof surface.

Absorbent Partners (Above PUL Barrier)
  • Zorb® Original: Enclosure-required absorbent fabric for rapid liquid capture in diaper inserts and menstrual pad cores. Position between a skin-contact surface layer and the PUL barrier. For details, see Zorb® Original: The Complete Guide to Wazoodle's Foundation Absorbent Fabric.
  • Zorb® 3D Stay Dry: Stay-dry absorbent fabric that can contact skin directly, eliminating the need for a separate wicking top layer. Pairs with PUL barrier underneath. For details, see Zorb® 3D Stay Dry Dimple: The Complete Guide to Wazoodle's Premium Stay-Dry Absorbent Fabric.
Surface & Shell Partners
  • ProCool® Performance Interlock: Moisture-wicking interlock knit for skin-contact surface layers in diaper and pad constructions. For details, see ProCool® Performance Interlock: The Complete Guide to Wazoodle's Versatile Moisture-Wicking Fabric.
  • Cotton flannel and cotton jersey: Common outer shell and decorative layers for cloth diapers, wet bags, and changing pads.
Proven Layer Stacks
  • Cloth diaper cover: Outer shell fabric → ProSoft 2 mil ECO-PUL (W-273 or Silver W-268) as waterproof barrier wrapping over a separate absorbent insert.
  • Menstrual pad: Skin-contact topper (ProCool® Interlock or cotton) → absorbent core (Zorb® Original) → ProSoft 2 mil ECO-PUL (W-273 or Silver W-268) as waterproof backing.
  • Reusable wet bag: ProSoft 2 mil ECO-PUL Print (W-511) as the complete bag shell — printed face outward, waterproof film inward. The thicker 2 mil film provides added durability for bags subject to regular handling stress.
  • Reusable food storage bag: ProSoft FoodSAFE Heavy Duty (W-397) as interior lining paired with decorative cotton exterior — food-safe surfaces face inward for direct food contact. The 2 mil platform's firmer body and lower stretch (5% vs. 10% for 1 mil) provides more dimensional stability for structured bag construction.
  • Incontinence underpad: Surface fabric (ProCool® terry or cotton flannel) → absorbent core → ProSoft 2 mil ECO-PUL Silver (W-268) as waterproof barrier with antimicrobial odor control.

ProSoft® Waterproof 2 mil ECO-PUL™ Applications

ProSoft® Waterproof 2 mil ECO-PUL™ is customer-validated across personal care, humanitarian, pet, food storage, and specialty applications. The thicker barrier construction and higher dimensional stability make this style particularly popular for applications subject to heavier physical demands than typical 1 mil PUL use cases.

Cloth diapers and baby care include diaper covers, swim diapers, wet bags, changing pads, bibs, and burp cloths. Users report the fabric maintains its appearance and waterproof performance through almost a year of continuous diaper use, noting it outperforms craft store PUL alternatives in both hand feel and wash durability.

Incontinence and menstrual products represent a major application category. Makers construct adult incontinence pads and diaper covers, menstrual pads, period underwear, nursing pads, and bed protection. Church community groups produce incontinence pads for elderly members.

Silver Plus variant (W-268) provides antimicrobial odor control (bacterial inhibition valued in extended-wear hygiene products). Humanitarian programs use this fabric for reusable menstrual pad systems donated to refugee women and communities in countries where disposable products are unavailable or unaffordable. Multiple customers purchase in bulk specifically for dignity kit construction.

Food storage and household applications are especially well-served by the FoodSAFE Heavy Duty variant (W-397), which carries FDA food-contact certification for reusable snack bags, sandwich wraps, bowl covers, and bread storage bags. Customers specifically report preferring the 2 mil FoodSAFE construction's more substantial feel over the standard-weight FoodSAFE PUL for food bag applications.

A preschool cook uses FoodSAFE Heavy Duty to make gallon-sized reusable snack bags for portioning across classrooms. Standard 2 mil variants are also used for grocery bag linings (users report easy cleanup when contents leak), pot covers, and cheese covers.

Pet and specialty uses include pet bed covers rated for hot-water sanitization, pet diapers, horse potty bags, outdoor furniture slipcovers, quilted picnic blanket backing, massage table sheets, renaissance faire rain capes, and waterproof tote bags. The 2 mil thickness and hot-water washability suit applications requiring regular heavy-duty laundering. FoodSAFE Heavy Duty (W-397) has been customer-validated for scratch resistance against 90+ lb dogs and 6+ year lifespans in high-wear applications including protective gloves for a disabled child.

Caring for ProSoft® Waterproof 2 mil ECO-PUL™

ProSoft® Waterproof 2 mil ECO-PUL™ maintains its Waterproof 300X Technology (300+ wash cycle durability) when care protocols protect the polyurethane film from chemical degradation and heat damage.

Washing

Hot water is safe and valued for sanitization in pet and healthcare applications. Use zero-residue liquid detergent with an extra rinse cycle to remove residues that degrade the film. Non-chlorine oxygen bleach is acceptable sparingly if needed.

Drying

Medium heat only — never exceed 130°F (50°C). High heat damages the TPU film. Line drying is always safe.

Avoid completely

Fabric softeners (permanently destroy waterproofing and antimicrobial function), chlorine bleach (causes delamination), vinegar and baking soda (break down the laminate bond), dryer sheets (coat the film).

Store away from direct sunlight — UV exposure causes yellowing and cracking over time.

For complete ProSoft PUL care protocols including sanitization options, see ProSoft PUL Care Guide.
