Zorb Microfiber Fleece: The Complete Guide to Wazoodle's Dirt-Trapping Absorbent Fleece

What Zorb Microfiber Fleece Heavy Duty Is and Why It Matters

Zorb Microfiber Fleece Heavy Duty (W-424) is a super-absorbent 100% polyester fleece featuring single-sided brushed construction engineered with Hydro-Dual Fiber Technology (rapid liquid capture and three-dimensional moisture distribution). The brushed microfiber pile on one surface captures both liquid and particulates while the smooth flat back creates a directional stay-dry barrier — absorbing 8 times the fabric's weight in under 2 seconds, 20× faster than bamboo, cotton, or hemp knits.

What separates Microfiber Fleece from the sibling Zorb Microfiber Loop Terry family is construction type: brushed fleece pile versus raised loop surface. The fleece pile traps dirt, dust, and particles in addition to liquid — making it the Zorb family's dual-purpose cleaning textile. Loop Terry excels at pure liquid management through increased loop surface area; Microfiber Fleece excels when particle capture and liquid absorption are both needed.

This is a standalone absorbent fabric requiring a separate waterproof barrier (ProSoft ECO-PUL or similar) for leak protection. It is a single-variant product — no weight tiers, no Silver antimicrobial, no FoodSAFE option. Ready-AbZORB Technology provides full absorption from first use. CPSIA certified, manufactured Forever Chemicals-Free (no PFAS, BPA, phthalates). 100% polyester, 480 GSM, 70–72" width. Made in USA by AKAS Tex.

Choosing Zorb Microfiber Fleece: When Fleece Construction Serves Better Than Loop Terry

Zorb Microfiber Fleece and Zorb Microfiber Loop Terry share Hydro-Dual Fiber Technology, 100% polyester fiber content, and Ready-AbZORB processing. The decision between them is construction type — brushed fleece pile versus raised loop surface — which determines how the fabric interacts with liquid and particulates.

Choose Microfiber Fleece (W-424) When:
  • Particle capture matters: Brushed fleece pile traps dirt, dust, and debris alongside liquid — mop pads, cleaning cloths, and multi-purpose reusable wipes where sweeping and absorbing happen simultaneously.
  • Soft pile contact is preferred: The brushed surface provides a softer hand feel than loop terry's textured surface — relevant for skin-contact applications like postpartum pads and body-contact absorbent layers.
  • Wider fabric is needed: At 70–72" width versus Loop Terry's 60–65", Microfiber Fleece yields more pattern pieces per yard for production cutting efficiency.
Choose Microfiber Loop Terry Instead When:
  • Maximum liquid surface area matters: Loop Terry's raised loops create more liquid contact points than brushed pile — better initial capture for high-volume liquid events like diaper soaking.
  • Weight tier options needed: Loop Terry offers Standard (200 GSM), Heavy Duty (515 GSM), and Ultra Heavy Duty (680 GSM). Microfiber Fleece is available only at 480 GSM.
  • FoodSAFE certification required: Loop Terry has FoodSAFE variants; Microfiber Fleece does not.

No antimicrobial option in this product. Zorb Microfiber Fleece does not include Silver Plus antimicrobial treatment. For applications requiring built-in odor control — extended-wear incontinence products, overnight menstrual protection — consider Zorb 3D Stay Dry Dimple Silver or Zorb 3D Bamboo Dimple Silver families.

Working With Zorb Microfiber Fleece: Sewing and Construction Guide

Zorb Microfiber Fleece sews on standard home machines with appropriate needle sizing. The primary construction considerations are managing fleece pile direction, preventing edge fraying, and positioning the flat back correctly for stay-dry function.

Cutting and Layout
  • Sharp rotary cutter or fabric shears: Dull blades pull fleece fibers and create ragged edges. Cut on a stable surface with a fresh blade.
  • Pile direction consistency: Cut all pattern pieces with pile running the same direction for consistent appearance and hand feel in the finished product.
  • Immediate edge finishing: Fleece construction frays easily at cut edges. Serge or zigzag all edges immediately after cutting, before any other handling or washing.
  • Marking: Use tailor's chalk or washable markers on the flat back side. Avoid pins — they snag and damage the fleece pile.
Sewing Techniques
  • Needles: Size 90/14 stretch needles with polyester thread handle the 480 GSM weight without skipped stitches. Standard straight stitch at 3.0mm length works for seams.
  • Orientation: Position flat back toward skin for stay-dry function. Brushed pile faces the liquid source — this is the absorbent capture side.
  • Edge treatment: Serge or enclose all raw edges. Fleece raveling is the primary construction challenge — unfinished edges deteriorate progressively through washing.

Fleece pile attracts lint and debris. Do not wash Zorb Microfiber Fleece with lint-producing fabrics (cotton terry, other fleece, towels). Microfiber pile traps and stores particles that progressively reduce absorption efficiency. Wash separately or with other non-shedding synthetic fabrics only.

Pairing Zorb Microfiber Fleece With Other Wazoodle Fabrics

Zorb Microfiber Fleece is a standalone absorbent fabric — it does NOT include waterproof protection. Every leak-proof product requires pairing with a separate waterproof barrier below and typically a skin-contact layer above.

What Goes Above Zorb Microfiber Fleece (Skin-Contact Side)
  • Flat back used directly: The smooth flat back provides a built-in stay-dry surface for many applications. For cloth diapers where the flat back faces skin, no additional liner may be needed.
  • ProTEC Microfleece (W-262): Hydrophobic stay-dry fleece for enhanced skin dryness in diaper applications where an additional dry barrier between skin and the absorbent core is preferred.
  • ProCool Dri-QWick Jersey Mesh (W-434): Athletic moisture-wicking layer for period underwear and incontinence products where smooth, dry skin contact is needed during extended wear.
What Goes Below Zorb Microfiber Fleece (Waterproof Barrier Side)
Proven Layer Stack Configurations
  • Cloth diaper insert: ProTEC Microfleece (W-262) stay-dry layer → Zorb Microfiber Fleece (W-424, flat back up, pile down) → ProSoft 1 mil ECO-PUL (W-375) waterproof barrier.
  • Reusable menstrual/postpartum pad: ProCool Dri-QWick Jersey Mesh (W-434) skin-contact → Zorb Microfiber Fleece (W-424) absorbent core → ProSoft 1 mil ECO-PUL (W-375) waterproof backing.
  • Pet training pad: Zorb Microfiber Fleece (W-424, pile facing up toward liquid) → ProSoft 2 mil ECO-PUL (W-273) waterproof base.
  • Standalone cleaning applications: Zorb Microfiber Fleece (W-424) used without waterproof layer — mop pads, cleaning cloths, reusable wipes, unpaper towels where waterproofing is not needed. Pile side captures both particles and liquid.

Common Applications for Zorb Microfiber Fleece

Zorb Microfiber Fleece serves applications where fast polyester-based absorption combines with particle-trapping fleece pile for dual cleaning function, quick-drying performance, and durability through hundreds of wash cycles.

  • Mop Pads and Cleaning Textiles — The application that most leverages this fabric's unique advantage over Loop Terry. Brushed fleece pile captures dirt, dust, and debris while simultaneously absorbing liquid — true dual-function cleaning in a single fabric layer. Suitable for commercial and residential mop pad construction.
  • Cloth Diaper Cores and Inserts — The 480 GSM weight with under-2-second capture provides serious absorbency in a single layer. The flat back's stay-dry function creates a built-in skin barrier, potentially reducing the need for a separate stay-dry liner depending on the design.
  • Reusable Menstrual and Postpartum Pads — Customer-validated for postpartum pad construction, indicating the brushed fleece softness meets comfort requirements for sensitive skin contact. Pair with waterproof barrier for complete leak protection.
  • Pet Training Pads and Cage Liners — Fast capture prevents liquid tracking. The fleece pile traps loose bedding material and particulates in small animal cage applications in addition to absorbing liquid.
  • Reusable Towels, Washcloths, and Unpaper Towels — The fleece construction produces soft, substantial toweling that becomes softer with washing. Suitable for kitchen, bath, and general cleaning applications where reusable alternatives replace disposable products.
  • Hair Accessories — Customer-validated for hair scrunchie construction, where the soft fleece texture provides comfortable grip and moisture management.

Zorb Microfiber Fleece Care: Washing, Drying, and Protecting Microfiber Performance

Zorb Microfiber Fleece becomes softer with repeated washing while maintaining absorption performance through hundreds of wash cycles. Absorbency is engineered into the fiber structure — not a chemical treatment that washes out.

Washing

Wash at medium temperature with liquid detergent only — use half the normal quantity. Powder detergent may not fully dissolve and lodges in microfiber pile, reducing absorbency. If performance diminishes, strip with hot water to remove detergent buildup, body oils, and mineral deposits.

Drying

Dry on low heat or permanent press setting. Polyester melts at high temperatures, destroying pile structure and absorbency. Hot water washing enhances performance over time, but high-heat drying damages it.

What to Avoid

Four things that permanently damage Zorb Microfiber Fleece:

  1. Fabric softeners and dryer sheets — coat microfibers with hydrophobic residue that permanently destroys absorbency.
  2. High heat drying — melts polyester fibers and destroys pile structure.
  3. Bleach and chlorine — degrade polyester fibers and reduce functional lifespan. (4) Lint-producing wash companions — never wash with cotton terry, other fleece, or shedding fabrics. Microfiber pile traps and stores particles, progressively reducing absorption.

Pre-Wash and Activation

Ready-AbZORB processed — full absorption from first use. Pre-washing is optional but recommended for hygiene in body-contact applications. If pre-washing, serge all edges first — unfinished fleece frays in the washer. Expect 1–2% length shrinkage with minimal width change.

Surface Maintenance

Pilling on the fleece surface is a normal wear pattern over time. Use a fabric shaver to restore appearance without affecting absorbency performance.
