Construction Essentials

Layer Assembly and Quilting

Quilt through all layers at 2–4" intervals to prevent absorbent core shifting during washing. Tighter quilting intervals than bed pads because the smaller pad size makes bunching more noticeable.
Walking foot essential for feeding multi-layer sandwiches evenly.
Polyester thread only through any PUL or CORE PUL layer — cotton thread wicks moisture through needle holes.
Ballpoint or jersey needles (80/12 or 90/14) to prevent puncturing the waterproof film.

Waterproof Layer Handling

Pin-free techniques required. Use fabric clips, binder clips, or adhesive tape — pin holes through PUL film are permanent leak points.
Parchment paper between PUL film and presser foot prevents sticking during sewing. Only needed if the PUL film faces up — if positioned against the feed dogs with cotton on top, standard presser feet work without sticking.
Apply seam sealing tape over all seams penetrating the waterproof layer.

Edge Finishing

Double-fold bias binding (2–2.5" wide cut) encasing all three raw layers — must sew through all layers with reinforced corners. Bias-cut binding handles corners more smoothly than straight-grain binding.
Pre-wash binding fabric to prevent differential shrinkage pulling seams after laundering.

Care Overview

Wash and Dry Protocol

Warm water wash (not hot) — hot water degrades the PUL film bond and shortens waterproof lifespan. Use detergent free of dyes, fragrances, and softening agents.
Low heat or line dry: High heat damages PUL laminate. Sun drying helps address staining.
Quick-wipe between washes: Waterproof PUL exterior can be wiped with spray cleaner or disinfectant wipes for minor incidents or after use on public changing stations — no full laundering needed every time.

Never use fabric softeners or dryer sheets on any reusable changing pad fabric. Softeners coat absorbent fibers, reducing absorption capacity and destroying wicking performance. This damage is progressive and may be irreversible.
