Burp Cloth Construction and Edge Finishing

Burp cloth construction is the simplest project in baby sewing — a rectangular shape with edge finishing and no closures or complex layering.

Cutting: Cut fabric to 9–10" × 18–20" plus seam allowances using a rotary cutter with acrylic ruler. For multi-layer construction, cut all layers to identical dimensions. Pre-washing is essential. Pin-Free Assembly for PUL: When the burp cloth includes a waterproof PUL layer, every pin hole creates a wicking path that causes leaks. Use fabric clips or adhesive tape instead.

Burp Cloth Care

Burp cloths require daily washing due to food protein content (breast milk, formula). Incomplete protein breakdown causes persistent sour odor and reduces absorbency.
Hot water wash with enzyme detergent — rinse cloths promptly after use to prevent protein from setting. Stripping wash (hot water with Dawn dish soap or washing soda) every 50 washes restores absorbency when cloths begin feeling less effective.

Never use fabric softeners or dryer sheets on burp cloths. Softeners coat absorbent fibers, reducing absorption capacity 30–50% and trapping food proteins that promote bacterial growth. This damage is difficult to reverse.

Low heat drying — dry on low heat or line dry. Sun drying naturally helps reduce milk protein staining.
