ProSoft PUL Types: ECO PUL vs CORE PUL vs FoodSAFE PUL vs MediPUL

The Decision You're Making

You've chosen ProSoft PUL for your project's waterproof barrier — now you need to select which PUL type matches your specific requirements. All ProSoft PUL types share the same core performance: waterproof barrier rated at more than 100× any normal use pressure, breathability that allows body moisture vapor to pass through instead of being trapped against skin, an independently tested bond 50% stronger than competitor US-made PUL, and 300+ wash cycle durability. The difference is what ADDITIONAL capability each type provides beyond standard waterproofing.

This decision is about certification requirements, durability demands, and special function needs — not about waterproof quality, which is consistent across the entire ProSoft line. If you're not yet sure ProSoft PUL is the right brand for your project, start with What is ProSoft? The Complete Guide to Waterproof PUL Fabrics.

Once you've chosen your PUL type from this guide, use ProSoft PUL Construction Types to compare film thickness, base fiber, and fabric type options within your chosen family.

Understanding Your Options

ECO-PUL: The Standard Foundation

ProSoft ECO-PUL is the baseline ProSoft PUL type and the right starting point for most projects.

Core advantages:

  • ECO-Thermal Bonding Technology (solvent-free permanent film fusion) creates a bond independently tested 50% stronger than competitor US-made PUL — the foundation for 300+ wash cycle durability
  • Delivers the full ProSoft waterproof specification: barrier pressure rated at more than 100× normal use, breathability matched to resting body moisture output, and Waterproof 300X wash durability
  • Widest selection of base fabrics, film thicknesses, colors, and prints across the entire ProSoft line

When to choose ECO-PUL: Your project requires reliable waterproofing without food contact, medical certification, or embedded barrier construction.

Available options: Four base fiber families (polyester, organic cotton, bamboo, REPREVE recycled polyester), multiple fabric types (interlock, jersey, fleece, sherpa, loop terry, twill, foam), both 1 mil and 2 mil film thicknesses, with optional Silver antimicrobial, Stretch-FIT lycra, and printed pattern variants. Over 40 products in total.

CORE PUL: Protected Embedded Barrier

ProSoft CORE PUL uses three-layer construction that sandwiches the waterproof membrane between two fabric layers instead of exposing it on the surface.

Why this matters: This embedded architecture protects the polyurethane film from abrasion, friction, and mechanical stress — the primary causes of delamination in standard surface-coated PUL.

When to choose CORE PUL: Projects where the waterproof barrier faces demanding physical conditions: frequent compression, heavy use, or institutional laundering cycles.
Trade-offs: Heavier weight and fewer base fabric options compared to standard ECO-PUL.

Available options: 8 constructions from lightweight (180 GSM) to ultra-heavyweight all-in-one systems (685 GSM).

FoodSAFE PUL: FDA-Certified Food Contact

ProSoft FoodSAFE PUL is the only PUL fabric line tested and certified for direct, repeated food contact under FDA regulations 21 CFR 177.1680 and 175.300.

Certification scope: Both fabric and film sides are validated safe across all food types — baked goods, dairy, fats, acidic foods — from freezer temperatures (-20°C) to 250°F.

When to choose FoodSAFE PUL: Your product will contact food at any point during its use.

Critical distinction: Standard ECO-PUL and CORE PUL are not FDA-certified for food contact, regardless of their chemical safety profile.

Available options: 16 options across polyester, organic cotton, bamboo, and recycled polyester bases.

MediPUL: Level 4 Surgical Barrier

ProSoft MediPUL meets ANSI/AAMI PB70 Level 4 barrier standards — the highest protection classification for surgical gown fabrics.

Certification scope: MediPUL passes both ASTM F1670-B synthetic blood resistance and ASTM F1671-B viral penetration testing, providing certified bloodborne pathogen protection.

When to choose MediPUL: This certification is required for surgical gowns, isolation gowns, and medical barrier textiles in clinical settings.

Available options:

  • Standard MediPUL: 6 options on polyester and organic cotton
  • MediCORE PUL: 4 options with embedded three-layer barrier construction, including absorbent variants with integrated Zorb

Silver PUL: Antimicrobial Enhancement

Silver Plus (antimicrobial bacterial inhibition and odor control) is verified 99.5% effective against bacteria and fungi, controlling odor development between washings.
Product identification: Silver variants are identified by "Silver" in the product name.

When to add Silver: Your application involves extended wear, infrequent washing, or odor sensitivity — incontinence products, medical textiles, and menstrual products benefit most.

For detailed information on how Silver Plus antimicrobial technology works, see the relevant Technology Discovery article.

Silver Plus antimicrobial is available as an add-on across ECO-PUL, CORE PUL, and MediPUL families. It does not change the waterproof performance or certification status of the base PUL type — it adds bacterial inhibition and odor control functionality.

Head-to-Head Comparison: ProSoft PUL Types

All ProSoft PUL types share identical core waterproof performance: barrier pressure rated at more than 100× normal use (240 psi for 2 mil variants), breathability that allows body moisture vapor to pass through, independently tested bond strength 50% above competitor US-made PUL, 300+ wash cycle durability, CPSIA certification, and Forever Chemicals-Free verification. The differences lie in additional certifications, construction method, and specialized capabilities
.
ECO-PUL provides standard waterproof protection with the broadest product selection — over 40 fabric options spanning polyester, organic cotton, bamboo, and recycled polyester bases in both 1 mil and 2 mil film thicknesses.

CORE PUL matches ECO-PUL's waterproof specs but adds embedded barrier protection through three-layer construction, offering maximum durability at higher weight (8 options).

FoodSAFE PUL adds FDA food contact certification to ECO-PUL's waterproof performance — the distinguishing factor is regulatory compliance, not waterproofing quality (16 options).

MediPUL adds Level 4 surgical barrier certification (blood and viral penetration resistance) beyond standard waterproofing — again, the distinction is certification level, not base waterproof performance (10 options including MediCORE).

All fabric specifications may vary ±10% due to textile industry manufacturing standards. Your results may vary based on product design and construction.

PUL Type Core Strength Additional Certification Product Selection Price Range
ECO-PUL Broadest versatility CPSIA standard Widest (40+ options) Base pricing
CORE PUL Embedded barrier durability CPSIA standard Focused (8 options) Moderate premium
FoodSAFE PUL FDA food contact safety FDA 21 CFR 177.1680 Broad (16 options) Moderate premium
MediPUL Pathogen barrier protection ANSI/AAMI PB70 Level 4 Focused (10 options) Higher premium

Silver Plus antimicrobial is available as an add-on across ECO-PUL, CORE PUL, and MediPUL families. It does not change the waterproof performance or certification status of the base PUL type — it adds bacterial inhibition and odor control functionality.

Which ProSoft PUL Type Is Right for Your Project?

If your product will contact food → FoodSAFE PUL is required, regardless of the food type or temperature. Standard ECO-PUL is not FDA-certified for food contact even though it is chemically safe. This applies to reusable snack bags, bowl covers, lunch bag linings, and any product storing or wrapping food.

If your product requires medical-grade pathogen barrier → MediPUL is required for surgical gowns, isolation gowns, and clinical barrier applications needing ANSI/AAMI PB70 Level 4 certification. No other PUL type meets this standard.

If your product faces extreme mechanical stress or institutional laundering → CORE PUL provides embedded barrier protection that resists the abrasion causing standard PUL to delaminate. Consider CORE PUL for commercial daycare products, institutional incontinence pads, and any application with aggressive daily laundering.

If your project needs reliable waterproofing without specialized certifications → ECO-PUL provides the same core waterproof performance as every other PUL type with the widest selection of base fabrics, weights, and colors. This covers cloth diapers, wet bags, mattress protectors, changing pads, pet products, and most consumer waterproof applications.

If odor control matters for your application → Add Silver Plus antimicrobial to whichever PUL type you've selected above. Silver variants exist across ECO-PUL, CORE PUL, and MediPUL families.

When two requirements overlap — for example, food storage bags for a medical facility — prioritize the higher certification. FoodSAFE PUL serves the food contact need; MediPUL serves the medical barrier need. Consult Wazoodle Fabrics if your project requires multiple specialized certifications simultaneously.

Critical Construction Requirement: All ProSoft PUL fabrics require seam sealing. Every needle hole from sewing compromises the waterproof barrier. Apply heat-activated seam sealing tape over all stitched seams, or use enclosed construction methods. This is non-negotiable for waterproof integrity across every PUL type.
